This is a GINORMOUS plot of land undeveloped in east Midtown. That building jutting out to the right is a U.N. Building.
I don't know the story behind this place but it's nice to see all those weeds and wildflowers on one big piece of land.
Something you don't really expect to see in Manhattan.
I myself love weeds and wildflowers. They are always in the constant battle of taking back their land.
They'll come out of little cracks of concrete and if they can they will break the concrete.
Weedy trees like the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) are taking back the ghettos and city streets one sidewalk crack at a time.

This is in the morning when the air is still cool and the leaves are still moist.
This particular morning I saw nature projected on this street.
This street is actually an Avenue and It's also where I live.

My block has huge Norway maples lining most of it. It creates a great cooling system for the houses and the street.
But never mind the practicality of it.
The dappled shadow show is interactive in that you can feel the wind and also watch the moving shadows of the leaves.

Sometimes, I get to catch the Sun setting from the NJ Turnpike.
The orange glow stains everything. It leaves a warm soft touch.
Like sepiafying real life. Though, I'm sure sepiafying is not a word.
Even the black and white film picked up on the softness of the moment.

Traveling Snail

A co-worker of mine slaps this little guy on my hand. Just another day at work. It must be a stowaway from a delivered plant.
There happened to be a group of little girls in the Budding Gardener's class outside in the garden, learning about plants.
I came out to show them and they huddled chaotically over my hand. Some of them brave enough to touch it and some of them too little to even get a glimpse.
I pulled the little ones up front for a closer look and I swear their eyes bulged out like the snail's feelers.
I checked for any peering eyes of the Budding Gardener's and placed the snail in the bog garden. After a little word of warning to the snail, I turned around to notice
a bug eyed girl in the glasshouse window watching me intently. I walked back inside and the same girl runs into my leg in a rush then asks if I've let the snail go.
"Yes I did, but he needs to get familiar with his new home now. Try not to bother him". She pouts and tells me she understands.

As we are walking on the beach...I found this beautiful tragedy.
I felt sad for it. I cannot fathom its demise. Raccoons? Foxes?
What would leave a bird without head, neck or legs?
Why has the torso been left behind? It could be an egret from the large size of it.
As I'm wondering all of this in despair, a friend of mine walks up and casually says "Pretty Bird".

And I remembered...It's good to have a sense of humor.

It leaves coloring up to the imagination. It conjures colors into your eyes.
In a way it is an optical illusion. An hallucination.
This picture is very green to me. It may not be for you.
It's like a joke that our brains play on our eyes.

As a kid I used to walk these up and down aimlessly.
Walking in between the tracks...I still remember the unevenness of the railroad ties. It never felt comfortable. There was never a good rhythm in your stride.
You're always a half step too fast or a half step too slow. Making the ties awkwardly interrupt your steps.
But now that I'm older, my stride and steps have grown just enough to be able to walk with rhythm. Walk facing straight.

Actually I can explain it. This is a well known phenomenon called Shitty Camera. I'm sure you've heard of it.
The Shitty Camera I used for these couple of shots is the Smena 8M.
My favorite one too.
If I was a ghost I hope I would get cool vision like this.

This one is...alot better. I actually feel like I'm alive looking at this.
I don't feel like a ghost.
This is next to an office building where I was visiting a friend. I wanted to get a closer shot but there was a drop which leads to that fence in the picture. It was just too damn cold for me to be monkeying around private property. I know, likely excuse.
I liked the plastic bags caught in the barbed wire, it reminded me of the South Bronx, and Astoria.
Life Sight feels so much better.

I do a lot of walking for my job. I walk from client to client all around the city. I water plants for large and small offices, and one retail place.
Also hospitals and a daycare center in the Bronx.
Alot of my time is spent traveling. Walking with my music in my ears and hordes of tourists to bob and weave through.
You'll see alot of these. It's just my life at the moment.
This is midtown somewhere.

This is a pretty long exposure if I remember correctly.
I would say close to 15 seconds.
The fall colors look amazing under the street light.

It doesn't look like the winding mechanism worked the way it should here... very common in my photos, I know. Just some of the problems with working with old cameras.

This is in a building I visit on Tuesdays for work.
Tourists are always huddled around a speaker in front of this glass wall, gazing up at the massive site of Ground Zero.
Every week without fail. They are there.
I try to pick out where they come from by the language of the speaker.

The underground subway system of NYC is a pretty astonishing and epic thing.
This was shot in the Whitehall stop on the R train. The last stop before entering Brooklyn. In this place all I see are tourists and suits.
Not my scene, really.

I wonder if the subway walls are amused by the masses of people coming and going. Fashion trends and new faces of different cultures emerging all the time. New tracks, new trains, and new conductors.
They even witness the stalactites of filth forming.

Hello all!

I've come back from a bit of a hiatus.
Just wandering in my thoughts is all. In my wandering I found that I have to come back to showing people my photos. I never stopped taking photos but I lost interest in showing them to other people.

A friend of mine who is traveling the country at the moment sent some encouraging words about my photos. I didn't realize anyone was viewing or even interested. I started this so I might be able to inspire others through my photos. I've lost track of what that means and lost faith in people.
When you lose faith in people, you lose faith in yourself.
Because you are in fact a part of the people.

I'm also changing how I upload pictures.
I'm going back to my old way.
Mainly for the ease of it. ^_^
They will appear smaller now, but you can just click it to get to a bigger picture! see? Baby food.

I used to work with a day laborer in my rooftop gardening days who would call easy tasks, Baby Food.
''You want me to carry this soil up two floors? Oh that's baby food, no problem".

Each picture will be a separate post for dramatic viewing!
And cus it's easier for me!
But mainly because it's easier for me. ^_^

I encountered this one day during a normal commute to work through Time square.

A dreaded place it is. Mobbed with tourists, beggars, and walking advertisements.

Sometimes there are woman with their whole bodies completely painted. Sometimes there are break dancers putting on a really "Urban" show. And other times shiny cars are placed in the center of it all showcasing the newest models.

Often I wonder how many tourists have pictures of loved ones with me in the background with a watering can strapped to my backpack. Now that's amusing.

My most recent batch of pictures I had developed were...well..not very good.
but I have a couple of alright shots.
ya just have to keep on shooting. Good or Bad.
I do it out of necessity.
It's a need to record my life in fragments and moments.
So that moment has play back value.
I can feel that fraction of a second all over again, pulling the entire memory even closer.
My time is mine to record. Who else will, if I don't?

This first shot is of Jaggery performing at a Yoga studio in Manhattan.
Spaciousness that would make a young woman curl up her toes and dance to the music only she can hear. It was a very intimate and dimly lit set. This shot was set in Bulb mode and I left the shutter open for about 15 seconds.
Singer Mali is that mass of wispy white dress on the left.
The ghost of Mali haunts us after every performance.

Because of the God Effect.

Hello all,

Welcome back to A Hundred Thousand Lucks.
I was asked today why I don't shoot in digital much anymore.
I first started to really love photography when I received my first digital camera(canon elph SD500) as a gift. Easy to carry, everything is pretty much automated and it taught me composition at a rapid pace. Few years later I graduated to a used Pentax *istD. This is how I learned of the workings of an SLR. Simple to understand, easy to operate, but with endless possibilities. Add the post-editing mindset and you have a highly altered digital photo creating process.
Sure it looks crisp, clear and pretty. Photos can easily be made to look hyper-realistic with the technology and editing skills available to us today. But something inside me tells me that these impeccable photos are not truthful. They're manipulated to seem impeccable.
It's a rare occasion to see in hyper-reality. It absolutely does happen, though. The right conditions have to match up with the right timing and the right emotions.(And camera)
This is what I call the God Effect. Sometimes God is ready for you to click that shutter for a perfect photo and other times God doesn't give a damn about your artistic vision. The God effect is the unknown. The seemingly random things that bless us and curse us. It's present in everyday things like a Poker game, cooking, fishing, etc. It's different from luck in the way that it doesn't come from within us but works around us. It's everywhere.
Shooting in film gives me a chance to capture moments in all its honesty.
It is in fact only a chance and I may find one good photo out of a hundred rolls of film, but I can proudly say that that one photo is honest, pure, and true.
I am in love with the God Effect and I will pursue the unknown to whatever end.

Hello Hello!

Welcome back for more strange pictures taken with crappy cameras!
I've taken a liking to the Kodak 400CN B&W 35mm film.
Our film technology has advanced leaps and bounds since the original production of Belomo Vilias.
It almost compensates for how inefficient my machines are. (almost)

Speaking of inefficient machines. I recently broke down and purchased a Zenit 3M!
It's a real old Russian SLR originally produced from 1962 up to 70.
It's based off of a camera that's a copy of the popular Leica II's.
Which means it's a copy of a copy of a Leica. It's also alot cheaper. ^_^
I'm pretty excited!...but I must be patient. It's flying all the way from the Ukraine.
It won't be here anytime soon....

oh right..so anyway! some pictures!
Some are from the new Highline park in Manhattan. Some are from the Met museum and even from a merrill lynch building that I visit for work every tuesday.
The subway car shot was a fun experiment. We were on the first cart going forward.
I squeezed my camera against the tinted window. Then I held the aperture open for 10, 12 seconds as we emerged out from the tunnel into the next station. And despite the window being tinted, I thought it came out quite nice.
There are also some pictures that are a mystery as to where I took them...that's not surprising is it? meeeh well what can ya do?

Poaceae and a Bridge.

Poaceae is the Grass family.
Bamboo is actually a grass. I bet you learned that from a snapple cap.
It is in fact the largest growing grass. It's also extremely strong and flexible.
Some of these shots are from an exhibit at the Met.
With a guided tour you can go on the bamboo paths and walk up and around through the structure.
I didn't get a chance to do this because of time restrictions but perhaps I will get to visit again.
The rest are from Central Park.
I've walked across the Park countless times but never have I seen this amazing bridge.
I tend to get to my destination by instinct. I have a general idea of direction but for the most part I am going by common sense and feel. This type of navigation is by no means actually good.
But it seems to be good for me. When I start to feel completely lost, I'll try and do things like visualize the name of the block i'm trying to get to on a street sign. This method has never failed me. I always end up finding my destination, but in the meantime I'm also worried sick that I might be hopelessly lost.

This roll was very educational. I learned that my viewfinder is so inaccurate because I am supposed to be shooting within a bracket inside the viewfinder. But the lines are so faded that I never knew they even existed! I was only able to see them after very close inspection.
There will be no more cutting off of foreheads! Enjoy!

Here are some shots from an expired Fuji 400 color roll, using my Belomo Vilia.
I bought a bunch of these rolls because they were just so cheap.
But it's true. You get what you pay for.
These were exceptionally crappy because they only have 12 shots in a roll.
I will never return to crappy film again.
My cameras are crappy enough, my film should be at least...unexpired.

But that doesn't mean I'll turn down any free expired film. *wink*

I've decided to put up some bonus shots from the last two rolls of Panoramic and B&W film.
The shot of the building with all of its magnificent reflections was inspired by Alyse Liebovich.
She has many published photos and is an overall dynamic person. Her photos are just as dynamic, if not more.
She captures reflections and patterns that make you look twice.

The second shot is of well...a tree! and a REALLY dark chandelier.
I really like how the left half with the light bulbs came out so dark and soft.

This is the beautiful Petaluma Vale at her University after receiving her scholarly awards.
Congratulations!

This was around 6 or 7pm. The Sun was setting and the skies became overcast.
I love when far from optimal conditions create surprising effects like this.
Just because your conditions aren't optimal doesn't mean you shouldn't go for it anyway.
Keep Shooting. Don't stop.

Here are the Bronx photos from the previous black and white roll.
Shot during one of my travels through the south Bronx at work every friday.
I feel a strange affinity towards this area.
It reminds me of Queens, my early childhood.
Astoria has those huge ominous subway tracks above ground, just like the Bronx.
There's a permanent shadow on the streets below.
I still remember, how it always feels so much cooler under the tracks on a hot summer day.

These were taken with my Belomo Vilia. The Vilia is an old Russian camera with very limited settings and a plastic lens. Shoots 35mm film and is one damn sexy machine.
I used (NEW!)Kodak 400CN 35mm B&W film.
The Vilia is becoming more and more popular among the Lomography community.
This camera actually goes for almost $80 on some sites.
I bought this camera off Ebay from someone in Russia for $15. s&h was $8.
Please always look at Ebay before buying anything from the Lomography site. They are absolutely unreasonable with their prices.
Many people sell these Russian cameras for very cheap, but are usually not in the US.

This was my first go with BW film and my Vilia. And on top of that, it's NEW film!
That's a first as well for this camera. I've been using expired film because they're just...so damn cheap. But new film is so worth it. I have one more expired roll of color film left and after I'm done with that...I'm only buying new film.

King Killer Studios, please check them out. They are by far the best rehearsal space/recording studio in Brooklyn.

Hello!

I've been on a long hiatus from updating this site. Yes I know, I'm sorry.
But in the meantime I haven't stopped shooting and I've started to take an interest in film cameras. And I don't mean SLRs. I mean old..crappy...used..light leaking...Russian cameras.
And any toy like plastic 35mm cameras. I am basically talking about Lomo cameras at a tight budget. Lomo cameras like the Diana and Holga can be a bit pricey considering they are garbage, plastic, unreliable cameras. If you do a little research online you can find cheaper cameras on Ebay that are essentially the same thing as the well-known Lomos.

But not for reasons you are thinking of...most likely.

That is what it looks like...sweet right?!(Roughly $10 on ebay, though I found mine for $1.99)
it is very technologically advanced. The plastic fixed lens shoots at 22mm.
It has a switch you move down...and it goes into PANORAMIC MODE!
which brings up these black bars that cut off the top and bottom of the film.
This technology is so advanced..I don't expect you to understand.
It's so awesome that it didn't even wind properly.

if you know who I am and where I live, you would know that I'm talking about Flat Rock Brook.
It's a small, nice little nature reserve, with a community feel.
I've been through these woods more than I ever should have.
And lately, I find myself back there to calm my nerves. To see the forest for the trees.
Working in the city, you start to forget the smell of a hickory nut. The sound of twigs breaking against their will under your feet. The sight of a water ripple that will ceaselessly wander outwards to find the ends of the pond.
On some lucky days I might find a herd of deer, walking slowly as they graze on the wildflowers.
Usually with these herds is a male deer. The ones with big scary antlers. I don't really know what the best thing to do in that situation is, but I know to keep calm, silent, and peaceful.

Two young fawns are rustling through the woods, in a playful manner. One of them notices us. It stands at attention and peers in our direction. Though, it was apparent that playing was far more important then the two humans on the rock. They disappear in a racket, and we took some steps away from them. I can hear the herd coming closer in our direction. Sounds of twigs, and leaves being disturbed perhaps for their first time. Halting immediately we stay still as a small family of deer come into view. The gnarled, sharp antlers of the male deer catches my attention. I thought for a moment that perhaps this was far more dangerous than I imagined.
The sharp points of the antlers face our direction and he stares straight at us.
I put my heart at ease. My instinct was to be calm and at peace. I felt as though I was one with the forest. That I was just one of the birch trees among the hills, dropping catkins and exfoliating my bark. He nods to me in a sign of acknowledgment, and we came to an understanding that we are not here to harm each other. Slowly the herd passes by us, with the Doe trailing behind in careful watch of her fawns. She was also aware of us, yet passed by without any hesitation.
Those few seconds of observing this herd felt like a lifetime. In perfect silence and perfect peace, I became the forest for a mere thirty seconds. The herd was walking upon me and I felt their every footstep. I was a tree in the forest.

A face that is in agony. Torture. A chill went up my spine..
Sometimes I take pictures that I wish I never took.

This is before I started to take pictures of the pretty soap in the store.
A spanish lady came up to me and said "Please no take picture in store".
I replied, "But it's just soap...".
"Please no take picture in store".
"But it's JUST SOAP".
She looked at me a little funny.
then I said, "Ok ok I'll stop, I'm sorry".

Photography gets me in trouble.
I like that.

This is a chair.
I know..it's just a chair.
I just read a book, called the Celestine Prophecy.
It reminded me of just how amazing and beautiful the world is.
It brought me back to my childhood, when everything was new to me. I can vividly see the beauty in things uninterrupted by the worries of our society.
Cellphone. Rent. Work. Insurance. Cars. What might someone think of me. Ego. Control. Facebook. Myspace. Television. Internet.

The sky used to be bluer when I was a child.
maybe my eyes have just grown darker.

The NYBG Rose garden is always nutritious for your eyes.
Even out of season.

Walking from the top of the stairs that are seemingly carved out of a giant boulder, a garden in a perfect circle is panoramically sprawled below me. I can't help but sigh every time I see this view. The rose garden usually marks the end of my trip here. Not out of choice, but out of coincidence.
There is an ornate gazebo centered in the carefully planned architecture of the garden. Standing in the center of it all gives you a sense of feeling one with the rose garden.
I tilted my face up under the gazebo, eyes closed soaking in the rays of the sun. The gazebo provided just enough shade in its geometric detail, to spare me from squinting when I opened my eyes. The rose garden felt one with the universe, and for a short moment everything was everything, and I was its eyes. Observing myself.

a flow of mustard bright yellow garments flash in the distance.
An expression of amusement slowly wrinkles in my face, and what I was witnessing was a video shoot of some sort. A man and woman dancing in bright colored garb, dancing like they do only in Indian Bollywood films.

I can see that some visitors are gazing up into the sky, furrowing their brows in concern.
Droplets of rain appear in the gravel walkways, and again the rose garden marks the end of this trip to the Botanical Garden.

This was what I saw while I was peeing in Brooklyn somewhere...
The venue was called Good Bye Blue Mondays and I've been there numerous times to listen to music. A nice friendly venue with a trailer park trash-esque feel.

I really enjoy the contrast of color in this photo.
The colors seem old, rusty, and unkempt...just like this backyard.
This is where you end up when leaving from the backdoor of the Paul Vincent Art Gallery in Hoboken.
Being from the suburbs, I'm not too used to sights like this.
I found it...strangely alive with weeds and grasses growing out of crevices and mysterious cracks. I also felt something about it was beautiful in its years of neglect. Like the sincerity and innocence of a neglected,socially inept child.

The Carnival came to town.
the CARNIVAL CAME TO TOWN!!
I watched fireworks, and took pictures of wonderfully mad carnie-folk.
Actually I found myself strangely self conscious about taking pictures of the Carnie-folk. I felt as if I was taking a picture of an animal at the zoo,
or a Freak at the circus.
I spotted an obvious Carnie. Wheel-chair bound and scraggly. Neon glowsticks dangling from his neck . I found myself walking straight up to him with a smile on my face, of which he clearly had no intention on returning.
I grew wide eyed with expectation, clenching my camera. Then as quickly as I had made a decision to take his picture, I changed my mind...and kept walking past the man's menacing gaze.

I wonder how he is doing. Maybe somewhere far away in these lands, he is creeping someone else out with his menacing eyes.

This is actually my first attempt at light writing.
I've been a graffiti lover and writer for a long time now.
I keep it strictly on paper and have never felt the need to vandalize anyone's perfectly good property. I prefer graffiti and artwork to be in areas in need of beautification. Graffiti should be about the beauty of the art, and not the amount of grief and damage you've caused a store owner or landlord.

This form of "Painting" is a very clean, safe, and legal way to paint in any place...(just about)
And way too much fun.
My study of light will enter a new age.
The union of photography and graffiti.

Well.
I haven't visited here in a long time....

Alot of things have happened in the last two months.
But this blog is in fact a photography blog. I think...at least at its heart.
So I'm going to be true to the heart, and just post a picture.

This one is from inside a wedding party tent found at NYBG(New York Botanical Garden).
It seemed the party was done, and everything was cleaned up and put away.
This tent was VERY big and fancy but...open, and free for me to roam around in.
I took quick shots as my girlfriend twirled around in joy under the enormous white tent.
Her red braids playing a game of tag in constant circles around her head.

Well, I'm not the best entomologist around...well I'm not an entomologist at all really...
Which means that I certainly cannot decipher if this winged beast is a Moth or Butterfly.
All I know is that this creature is Amazing.
I took this shot at the Butterfly exhibit in the Museum of Natural History.
It was one of the best museum experiences of my life.
I had a little bit too much fun. Imagine a really hot and damp room packed with all the plants from the tropics that butterflies love.
Release thousands of exotic butterflies in it, then place yourself inside that room. Flying things land on your head. You can reach out your hand in almost any direction and have one willingly land on your hand.

Also, this shot was taken with a Canon SD500 little snap n' shoot camera. This proves that these little cameras have pretty decent macro capabilities, due to their small lenses.

I found this little mantle decoration at one of Adrienne Anemone's shows.
It was...somewhere in Brooklyn..I never asked what the venue was called....that's just the kind of guy I am.
She played a great show as usual.
I don't know where the green light was coming from...I also don't question beauty when I see it.
Christmas lights...are always a wondrous thing to see, in the dark.
